Let's meet the Head Teacher:
Who are you?
My name is Will Nash and I am the Head Teacher at PLUK in Brighton & Hove. I have been living and working in Brighton as a teacher and professional musician for the best part of 7 years and am very excited for my new role at PLUK.
As a lifelong musician, I know firsthand the transformative power of music. I began playing music at a young age and it quickly became a passion that has stayed with me throughout my life. My experience as a performer and educator has taught me the solid foundation in music theory and technique, as well as the value of creativity and self-expression. I believe that every student has the potential to be a skilled and confident musician, and I am committed to helping them to achieve that goal.
What are your goals for Brighton Piano School?
When a student joins the school, I want them to have a personalised and fulfilling experience. Our students lead busy lives, so quick and efficient communication is essential. It is essential that our students feel confident that they are becoming the piano player they want to be, and supported along that journey. We will encourage them to explore their creativity and express themselves through music, striving to develop and nurture a lifelong passion for playing the piano.
In order to provide the best possible education for our students, we need a team of skilled and experienced instructors who are passionate about music and dedicated to their craft. By recruiting new piano teachers who share our values and vision, we can expand the range of classes we offer, and provide more opportunities for students to learn and grow.
Another key goal is to build a strong community around our school. Music is a powerful force to bring people together, and I believe that by creating a supportive and welcoming atmosphere, we can foster a sense of belonging among our students, parents and staff. This means organising events and activities that encourage interaction and collaboration such as concerts, jam evenings and social gatherings.
What makes a good piano teacher?
A good piano teacher should be kind and approachable, creating a welcoming environment where students feel comfortable and able to seek guidance. They are also able to provide a safe space for mistakes to be made, understanding that making mistakes is a natural and essential part of the learning process. Patience and being non-judgemental are also key attributes for a good teacher. They understand that everyone learns at a different pace and are willing to adapt teaching methods to suit the individual needs of each student.
It is important for a good piano teacher to be a professional musician themselves, who performs regularly and who has a wealth of experience and knowledge to share. They are also able to relay back what it is the student wants to get out of learning the piano, tailoring their lessons towards the individual interests of every student.
Overall, a good piano teacher must be patient, kind, approachable, passionate about music, confident in providing welcoming spaces for mistakes to be made, and dedicated to working hard with each student in order to achieve their goals.
What do you enjoy about the courses?
The courses at PLUK provide a wide overview of all the rudiments of music. We can confidently say that a complete beginner can walk into a session with one of our tutors and within 5 lessons will be playing simple songs with both hands. From there the Beginners Piano Course covers the basic rules of music, using famous pieces of music as case studies for each new skill.
These courses are not genre specific, helping to expose the piano student to many different kinds of piano songs that you may not have been given the opportunity to listen to before, creating a holistic understanding of the journey piano music has taken through the centuries. There is also no restriction on learning other material outside the piano courses, if anything, using other sources as well as the PLUK courses are encouraged in order to further create bespoke lessons for the student.
There is also ample opportunity to be creative in our courses. A musician's creativity may implore them to write a pop song, compose a classical piece of music, or improvise over a jazz standard. Our courses provide opportunities to do all these things, understanding that self-expression is a key part of any piano player's skill set.
A review from one of our piano students:
What do you like about your teacher?
I love my piano teacher’s enthusiasm for the piano and for music in general. We get to talk about different classical pieces and he recommends music for me to listen to.
I also think that he is a very skilled teacher when it comes to recognising where I struggle with different pieces or techniques, I often find that in the days following a lesson my playing becomes noticeably better after I've put into practice his recommendations. Initially I thought that perhaps having a lesson every single week would be too much but I honestly get a great deal of value out of the lessons and they are always productive. I also find my piano teacher is flexible in terms of changing up the lessons so we focus on different things and it doesn't get repetitive. He is also happy for us to work towards the Grades as he knows I like the structure; overall I just find that he is a very intuitive teacher. It's been a little over a year now that I have been having lessons and we're working towards my Grade 2. I can't believe I've actually come this far and my piano lessons remain one of the favourite parts of my week.
What do you like about the course so far?
I really enjoyed the beginner’s intro course that we started with, it was a great all round introduction to everything. We've moved on to working towards the grades now, and I love having the structure of a syllabus to work towards.
Would you recommend your teacher to someone else? If so why?
Yes, I definitely would and I very often do. Even after he moved a little further out of town, I am happy to make the journey to visit and wouldn't consider finding a new teacher.
What do you enjoy about studying at the school?
It's such good fun and I get a wonderful sense of achievement out of it. My piano teacher is also a lovely guy and I really enjoy the occasional lesson where we will delve a little more into the theory behind things and just get to talk about the beauty of music and how mathematical it is.
